GEORGE TOWN: Lightning and a certain beetle robbed Singapore of what Penang is proud of: hundreds of giant angsana trees beside its roads.
In the 1970s, nearly all the angsana trees in the island republic were wiped out by a virus that came from the ambrosia beetle, said Singapore Botanic Gardens group director Dr Nigel Taylor.
