A load taken off beasts of burden at celebrations

KUALA LUMPUR: Low-key celebrations to mark Mattu Ponggal, a part of Tamil Ponggal, were held to honour all the animals that traditionally play an important role in agriculture.

In Samundeswarar Temple in Sunway, the bulls and cows were decorated, pampered, and worshipped. They were bathed and garlanded before prayers were held and sweet rice cooked and fed to them.

Both A. Punithan and Neiber Raani, who joined the prayers, said they were thankful to get a chance to honour the animals.

“We know how the bulls and cows are very important for agriculture work and we must be thankful,” Punithan said.

Ponggal is celebrated for four continuous days, with Mattu Ponggal falling on the third day.

Today, the final day, is Kaanum Ponggal, which celebrates young women.
