KUALA LUMPUR: Eight men have been arrested in connection with the theft of RM1.5mil worth of jewellery from a goldsmith shop in a Cheras mall.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Mazlan Lazim said the suspects were detained within a week after the robbery on New Year’s Eve.
“We are still questioning the men. We believe they are among those responsible for the heist,” he said.
Police are still looking for five others from the same gang.
“We are hunting them down and exploring all possible leads,” said Comm Mazlan.
On New Year’s Eve, five men wearing full-face helmets and gloves stormed into the premises and smashed the glass display cabinets of the goldsmith while five other men waited outside the mall on motorcycles.
The robbers took about three minutes to escape with the jewellery.
It is believed that the gang was also responsible for a robbery at a goldsmith in Kajang, where RM370,000 worth of jewellery were taken on Jan 4.
Another heist occurred in Seremban on Jan 4, where eight gunmen stormed into a goldsmith at a shopping mall in Kemayan Square and carted away six trays of jewellery.
A day later, police shot dead one of the suspects who is believed to be involved in a string of jewellery heists in Seremban and the Klang Valley.
