Cheap and good: Noor Haliza Mohd Hashim, 44, at her stall. Her budget meal comprising rice with vegetable, either fish or chicken and an iced drink is priced at RM3.

KULIM: A woman and her husband are selling budget meals and beverages to help students enjoy tasty dishes at low prices.

Affectionately known as “Kedai Makcik Seringgit” (Aunty One Ringgit Shop), it has been run by Noor Haliza Mohd Hashim, 44, and Mohamad Rozi Ishak, 48, in Jalan Pondok Labu here for six years now.

“The main attraction is the budget price for a set of rice dish from as low as RM2, and the drinks are only at RM1, and I sell (at these prices) because I feel for the students who do not have a big budget for food,” she told Bernama.

She said for the budget rice set, customers could choose from several types of dishes such as sardine, fried or boiled egg, sausage or meat, and vegetables.

“Customers may choose any of the dishes and vegetables for RM2,” she said, adding that all drinks prepared at the shop, including iced Milo, iced tea, and iced Horlicks, are priced at RM1 per serving.

Noor Haliza said they operate the shop from 7am to 7pm.

“The peak time is in the afternoon as most of the patrons are students, and they will order a budget meal for lunch,” she said.

In addition, she said many visitors stop by the eatery to buy beverages on the go, with some ordering up to 20 packets.

She said she is not losing money by selling at low prices, and it has, in fact, become a unique selling point which constantly draws customers to the shop.

Vocational college student Aiman Syafiq Iza Syarrizan, 18, said the budget meals sold at the shop are cheaper than those at his college canteen.

“My friends and I always eat here, especially during lunch time. The food here is delicious and the price is cheaper than at the canteen,” he said.
