Anthony’s remand extended by four days



KOTA KINABALU: Parti Warisan Sabah vice-president Datuk Peter Anthony will spend four more days in the lock-up as his remand which expired yesterday has been extended.

Anthony, who was being held under a three-day remand, was brought to the Kota Kinabalu magistrate’s court at 8.30am.

Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie allowed an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to extend the remand order to assist them in the investigation.

Anthony is being investigated over an alleged corruption involving a RM155mil Risda land deal.

He was arrested at 12.30pm on Friday after turning up at the state MACC headquarters to have his statement recorded.

AirAsia X increases flights to the Maldives

SEPANG: There will be an additional 156,000 seats per year from Kuala Lumpur to the Maldives following AirAsia X’s increase of flights to the idyllic island paradise four times weekly from Feb 6.

Currently, AirAsia operates daily flights connecting Kuala Lumpur and Malé, the capital of the Maldives, utilising its fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft with 180-seat and 186-seat capacity.

This brings the total weekly flights to 11 with an annual capacity of over 287,000 seats between the two countries.

Last year, AirAsia Malaysia carried over 106,000 guests between Kuala Lumpur and the Maldives.

“As the only airline servicing direct flights to the Maldives from Kuala Lumpur, our short-haul affiliate AirAsia has seen tremendous growth on this route since its commencement,” said AirAsia X head of commercial Barry Klipp.

40 nabbed over illegal gambling

KUALA LUMPUR: More than 40 people, including senior citizens, were rounded up for illegal gambling.

Cheras OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Ghani Mohamad Ji said police raided a premises in Jalan Serkut, Taman Pertama, at around 4.30pm on Sunday.

“The people inside were found to be playing mahjong.

“Among those arrested were three suspected to be organisers, two caretakers, 29 players and 12 onlookers, aged between 55 and 90,” he said.

Also seized were an assortment of gambling chips, mahjong tables and RM25,741.

Missing boy in Tawau found dead

KOTA KINABALU: A boy who fell into a river and went missing near his house in Tawau on Saturday has been found dead.

The body of Mohd Azizan Rosli was found lodged among tree roots by the riverbank behind his house at about 11.30am yesterday.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Department operations chief Khatizah Rahaban said the body of the eight-year-old boy was found by rescuers and villagers.

District police chief Asst Comm Fadil Marsus said initial investigations found there were no bruises on the body.

“We have classified this case as sudden death,” he said.

Man drowns after falling into stream

KOTA KINABALU: An elderly man drowned after he fell into a stream near his flood-hit house in Membakut district.

Ongi Ona was checking out the floods situation when he slipped and fell into the stream during the 4pm incident on Sunday.

Ongi, 66, had sought shelter at a relative’s house at the height of the floods and decided to return home to assess the situation when tragedy struck.

Beaufort police chief Deputy Supt Azmir Abd Razak said rescue workers found the victim stuck between some metal railings in the swollen stream.

His remains were sent to the Beaufort Hospital for a post-mortem.
