PETALING JAYA: Bersih 2.0 has criticised the Election Commission's (EC) move to hold local enquiries for its redelineation exercise in Selangor during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
“Most urban voters in Selangor will be spending that week of the year celebrating with families and may be on holiday,” the group said in a statement Thursday.
The EC's announcement comes after the Court of Appeal dismissed a stay order against local enquiries into the EC's redelineation exercise in Selangor on Monday (Dec 18).
Local enquiries – which are where the EC hears objections from the public, local authorities and state government – must be held before the EC can conclude its redelineation process.
The stay effectively paused the EC’s redelineation exercise in Peninsular Malaysia, as it was expected to produce a single complete redelineation report representing all states.
Bersih said that despite it highlighting the errors and non-compliance to the Federal Constitution, the courts allowed the EC to continue with the redelineation.
