GEORGE TOWN: Some sections of the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway will be temporarily closed at night over the weekend to enable the construction of a bicycle lane and pedestrian bridge near Queensbay Mall.
Today, a section from George Town to the south of the island will be closed between 11pm and 5.30am while tomorrow, the section heading to George Town will be closed from 11pm to 5.30am.
A posting by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) on its Facebook page says traffic heading from George Town to Batu Maung and Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge tonight would be diverted to the Bayan Baru roundabout through the directional ramp beside Queensbay Mall to Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah.
However, road users can use Kampung Jawa Expressway to continue their journey to the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway.
Those travelling from Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah and Jalan Tun Dr Awang heading towards Batu Maung and Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge can use Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah and continue towards the Kampung Jawa Expressway.
Motorists from Persiaran Bayan Indah and surrounding areas of Queensbay Mall heading towards Batu Maung and Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge can use the directional ramp beside Queensbay Mall and continue towards the Kampung Jawa Express-way via Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah.
Tomorrow night, the traffic from Batu Maung and Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge to the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway’s elevated road (viaduct) heading towards George Town will be diverted to the road under the flyover so that they can turn left into Jalan Kampung Jawa through the Free Industrial Zone.
Road users can then turn right into Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah and continue their journey to George Town.
MBPP engineer Yong Woo Soon who is in charge of the project said the closure was to install beams across the expressway.
“The bicycle and pedestrian bridge are almost completed.
“The beams are very big and the crane used to launch them will block the whole road section.”
