KOTA KINABALU: A woman was killed while two others sustained serious injuries after the vehicle they were travelling in skidded and crashed here early Thursday (Dec 14).

A man and the 27-year-old driver escaped unscathed near the Lido traffic light where there was construction work at the area during the incident.

The driver had to make an emergency swerve to avoid a four-wheel-drive, which is believed to have made an illegal U-turn into his lane, but ended up crashing in the 2.30am mishap.

The four-wheel-drive driver sped off following the accident.

Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm M. Chandra said the 23-year-old woman was killed on the spot.

"Two women, aged 25 and 29, were severely injured while a man and the driver escaped unscathed," he said in a statement Thursday.

He said initial investigations found that the accident was a result of the four-wheel-drive's illegal U-turn.

"We urge those with information to the accident or the said four-wheel-driver to come forward and assist probe," ACP Chandra said.

The mishap is being investigated for driving recklessly and causing death under the Road Transport Act.
