MIRI: Two brothers drowned after their car plunged into a river near here.

The incident happened at about 5.40pm Tuesday at Sungai Liku, located about 20km from the city.

It is believed that Gabriel Wilson, 23, and his younger brother Gary, 21, drowned as they were unable to escape from the vehicle in time.

However, it is unclear what caused the incident, with eyewitnesses saying that the vehicle fell off a jetty located on the bank of the river.

Miri Fire and Rescue Department chief Supt Law Poh Kiong said its personnel rushed to the scene after being alerted to the accident by the public.

Unfortunately, by the time the rescue personnel managed to locate the sunken vehicle, the duo had already drowned.

Their bodies were found floating not far from the sunken car, he said.
