KUALA LUMPUR: The first batch of Cambodian domestic workers are expected to arrive in Malaysia in the next three months.
Cambodia Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training director general Seng Sakda said the domestic workers will be properly trained before they are sent to Malaysia.
"We need time to ensure that the domestic helpers sent here are well prepared culturally and mentally," he told reporters after a signing ceremony of Memorandum of Agreement between the Cambodian Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training and Malaysian Association of Foreign Maids Agencies (PAPA) here on Wednesday (Nov 29).
The signing ceremony was witnessed by its Minister H.E. Dr Ith Sam Heng and represented by H..E Seng Sakda, Cambodian Director General of Laboour and Vocational Training whiile PAPA was represented by its president Jeffery Foo.
Meanwhile, Koo said there was an average of 2,000 applications every day for domestic helpers.
"This works out to be 50,000 applications a month and we can assure that workers are well taken care of and at this moment we are registering all maid agencies and they would have to sign an affidavit with the Ministry to ensure that the Cambodians were not abused or exploited.
"Under the agreement, all Cambodian helpers must be given a handphone. I can assure that the helpers will be very prepared to learn to adjust to Malaysian way of life," he added.
Koo also said the association and the Cambodian ministry were in the midst of finalising the salary scale and the cost of bringin in the domestic helpers.
