Wee hits back at Kit Siang over voter turnout remark

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic) has hit back at DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang for insinuating that Barisan Nasional parties could not get 30% voter turnout in any of their elections.

The MCA deputy president said that any election or re-election in MCA's history was attended by a majority of its delegates, and recorded over 90% voter turnout.

"First of all, I think Kit Siang as a veteran and seasoned politician, should check his facts before passing any comments.

"MCA elections in the past have seen close to full attendance. Some elections even recorded 95% to 97% voter turnout.

"I'm not interested to know why their voter turnout (at the DAP special congress) was only 54%. After all, it is none of my business.

"But when you start accusing other parties of being able to attract only 30% attendance, you have to justify your claims," Wee said after attending the third annual reception of the China-Aid Alumni Association of Malaysia at a hotel here on Monday (Nov 13).

He said that other Barisan parties, such as Umno and MIC, have also in the past recorded high voter turnout.

"Never in history have these parties recorded 30% voter turnout. I don't know where he came up with the figures. Maybe he plucked them out of the sky.

"Maybe they (DAP) are trying to cover up their own weaknesses," Dr Wee added.

Lim issued a statement on Monday to justify the 54% voter turnout at the DAP special congress to pick the party's 20 central executive committee (CEC) members on Sunday.

"One thought that struck me at the DAP special congress was what would have been the turnout of the Barisan Nasional component parties, in particular Umno, MCA, Gerakan and MIC, if they had to assemble their party delegates five years ago for a re-enactment of a special party conference.

"I have grave doubts that anyone of them would be able to muster a turnout of over 50% of their delegates five years ago, and I won't be surprised if some of them can’t even get 30% attendance turnout rate," Lim had said.
