KUALA LUMPUR: Gerakan Youth passed a resolution at its annual meeting to call on the authorities to restrict the awarding of the “Datuk” and higher titles to individuals aged 40 years and above.
“In the recent assault on Rela members and previous high profile incidents involving young Datuks, Gerakan Youth proposes a minimum age of 40 be set as a criteria for a Datukship or higher titles at the federal and state level,” the resolution read.
Gerakan Youth added that it urges each institution to set clear qualifying criteria and list the full contributions of the recipients subject to the ruler’s prerogative in special circumstances
The resolution was passed at the Youth's national delegates convention at the PGRM Tower on Saturday (Nov 11).
The call came following the case involving a 29-year-old Datuk Seri who had been charged with attacking three People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) members.
At the same time, Gerakan Youth also called on Putrajaya to introduce laws to prevent the abuse of titles.
The wing also proposed the enactment of laws that allows Putrajaya to take action against individuals involved in fake Datukships.
