PETALING JAYA: Penangites must call on the state government to put an end to floods caused by rampant over-development, says Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker(pic).
"Penangites must tell the Penang DAP state government - enough is enough! We don't want anymore," the MCA Religious Harmony Bureau chairman said in a statement on Friday.
Ti said Penangites should urged its government to put an end to illegal hill clearing, land reclamation, and environmental air pollution.
He questioned whether DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang would be issuing the same statement, which was made towards former Penang chief minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon 30 years ago, to his son Lim Guan Eng following the floods that hit Penang on Nov 5 that claimed seven lives.
Ti was referring to Kit Siang's remarks made in Aug 7, 1998, where the latter had called on Koh to head a task force on flash flood mitigation in George Town to send a clear message that the state had no intention of becoming the "Venice of the East".
"So what is being done to ensure the people of Penang will not have to suffer more due to the DAP state government's pro-development stand?" asked Ti.
Ti said since DAP won the election in 2008 claiming that it would "solve flood problems" in nine months, nothing has changed.
Subsequently, he said in the 2013 general election, Guan Eng had promised to resolved flood problems but from 2015 to 2017, there were flood havocs at several places in Penang.
"Penang is no more the Pearl of the Orient but the neo Venice of the East.
"Penang flood waters in 1998 were waist-deep but by Nov 2017, the record climbs a notch higher to chest-high tiers," he said.
