PETALING JAYA: Fourth time’s the charm for a private school teacher from Seremban who won a pair of flight tickets to Australia’s Gold Coast, Australia.
Sobha Rani Dev has been participating in The Star’s Fly Away Giveaway since the contest kicked off in early October.
“I was getting a bit disappointed for not winning anything. But now, I am elated over landing the Gold Coast prize,” she said.
“I’m glad I won in the final round because I was eyeing the Gold Coast tickets from the beginning,” she added with a laugh.
Sobha, who was accompanied by her husband and youngest son, received the prize at Menara Star yesterday.
The tickets worth RM9,151, courtesy of AirAsia X, will give the 62-year-old English teacher and her family a much needed holiday.
“I just want to relax and do some sightseeing. Of course, I want to taste their food as well,” she said, adding that she had won a holiday to Perth in 2004, also in a contest in The Star.
A longtime and avid reader of The Star, Sobha contributes translation work to the Step Up education pullout.
“I’ve been reading The Star since I was a schoolgirl. As a teacher, I used The Star’s Newspaper-in-Education (NiE) programme as a teaching tool in the classroom,” she said.
“Some students these days have problems holding a conversation.
But if they read the newspaper, they will find many interesting topics to talk about,” Shoba added.
At home, Shoba said The Star has become part and parcel of her family’s life.
“It’s a case of who gets the newspaper first. The Star is the catalyst to start my day – it’s like morning coffee.
“I feel incomplete if I don’t read it,” she said, adding that she folds pages with interesting stories that she will read at leisure in the evenings.
Shoba said the newspaper has brought so much joy to her family.
“I cannot thank The Star enough for allowing my family to experience so many new things. We have learnt a lot from the newspaper,” she said.
During its run in October, The Star’s Fly Away Giveaway contest gave readers a chance to win a pair of flight tickets to different destinations every week, courtesy of AirAsia Group.
Besides Gold Coast, the other destinations were Shanghai, Luang Prabang (Laos) and Sihanoukville (Cambodia).
