PETALING JAYA: Now in its third year, the Star Golden Hearts Award continues to celebrate the works of unsung Malaysian heroes who go all the way to help those in need, irrespective of race, culture and religion.
In his opening speech at the Star Golden Hearts Awards 2017, Star Media Group chairman Datuk Fu Ah Kiow said their efforts encompass the spirit of compassion, selflessness and moderation.
“They are shining examples of what we all should continuously strive to achieve as members of our community,” he said at the event held at Menara Star on Thursday (Nov 9).
Fu, who is also Star Foundation chairman, then extended his congratulations to the recipients of the awards.
In addition, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Joseph Kurup said the occasion was a celebration of Malaysians with a heart of gold.
“Your noble efforts are an inspiration for all of us. But more than that, they propel us to
take action and move us to take a step towards kindness for our fellow men.
“Congratulations, and thank you for all that you’ve done. Our best days are truly ahead of us,” added the guest of honour.
This year’s event is supported by Yayasan Gamuda.
Barefoot Mercy, which provides electricity and education support to improve quality of life in rural Sarawak, is the recipient of the Star-Gamuda Inspiration Award this year.
The prize, which is awarded to the person or group that comes closest to fulfilling the criteria of heroism, altruism and inclusivity, is chosen from the pool of winners.
The other winners were Anja Juliah Abu Bakar, Sashitharaan Maraighanasambanthan, the Sabah Women Entrepreneurs and Professionals Association, Kuan Chee Heng, Isak Ngau, Gnanasuntharavalli Sathasivam, Yayasan Kajian dan Pembangunan Masyarakat, Oon Thoo Seen and Tan Yee Mei.
Ecoworld Foundation chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, who led the panel of judges, commended the unsung heroes and said that their spirit and sacrifices are “very noble, commendable and very much in line with our desire to build a caring society”.
Also present at the ceremony were Star Media Group CEO Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, Gamuda Engineering managing director Datuk Ubull Din Om and social activist Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir.
