Sixth victim from Sungai Petani fire dies

ALOR SETAR: The Indonesian who suffered 70% burns in the Sungai Petani fire that killed five of his compatriots has succumbed to his injuries.

Shamsul, 40, who was critically burnt in the fire at Kampung Sungai Gelugur, Taman Petani Jaya in Sungai Petani on Tuesday (Nov 7), died on Thursday.

Kuala Muda district police chief ACP Saifi Abdul Hamid said the victim was pronounced dead about 2.15pm at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital's burn unit.

"The news on the death of the victim had been passed on to the Indonesian Consulate in Penang for further action," he said in a statement.

The five Indonesians who died earlier were identified as Mat Koleh and his wife Ummi, both in their 40s, Misbahul Anuar, 17, Habi Tokrimin, 40, and Toyibah, 60.

In an earlier statement on Wednesday, State Health Department director Datuk Dr Norhizan Ismail said Shamsul, who sustained 70% "full thickness burn" injuries, was in a very critical condition and had been on a ventilator.
