Shabery Cheek: Durian is the next big thing in China

KUALA LUMPUR: Durian from Malaysia is the next biggest thing that Chinese nationals queue up for, said the Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Ministry.

The other thing that Chinese nationals queue up for is the Apple's new iPhone X, said its minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

"We should be proud because people say that in China, there are only two things they queue up for.

"One was when the iPhone X was released and the other, is durian from Malaysia," he said in reply to Datuk Liang Teck Meng (BN-Simpang Renggam) during the question and answer session on Thursday.

Ahmad Shabery also said that the high prices of durian in Malaysia is not due to it being exported to China.

He said  the reason why the King of Fruits is pricey is due to the season, which causes the production of durian to decline.

Ahmad Shabery also said the hike in price should not be looked at negatively.

He said there are two seasons for durian, one is between June and July, the other is between November and December.

"When the production is high, the prices will drop. From statistics, we found that the production for this year has only been between 20% and 30%," he added.
