MELAKA: The Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) has no objection to the construction of a replica of the Christ the Redeemer statue in the Portuguese Settlement here as long as the work is carried out in accordance with local government by-laws, says Mayor Datuk Wira Zainal Hussin.
The proposal for the project, said Zainal, was submitted by the Portuguese Settlement’s village development and security committee in September and MBMB was still weighing the request based on several aspects as the site for the replica would be in a public area, owned by the state government. “But work was carried out without our approval and this has now placed us in a difficult position.
