ALOR SETAR: An 18-year-old college student was found drowned at the Hutan Lipur Puncak Janing waterfall in Kuala Nerang.

The deceased, identified as Muhammad Munir Abdul Rashid, is said to have gone for a swim with six other friends from Kuala Nerang Community College at about 4.30pm on Wednesday (Nov 8).

Padang Terap district police chief DSP Noh Idris said in a statement that the group of students had started swimming at about 5pm in a stream.

"Five of them went in to swim, including the deceased. While they were swimming, one of them saw the deceased struggling in the middle of the stream.

"Two of the students tried to help but their efforts were futile due to the depth of the stream and the strong current.

Fire and Rescue Department personnel managed to locate Muhammad Munir's body at 7.21pm.

The body was sent to the Kuala Nerang Hospital for a post-mortem.
