Teen feared drowned while swimming in mining pool

SUNGAI PETANI: A 13-year-old boy is feared to have drowned while swimming in a mining pool near here.

State Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Fire Supt Mohamad Mustakim Mukhtar said they received a distress call on the incident at about 1.46pm and a rescue team was rushed to the scene.

"Ops commander Annuar Zaini Zakaria and seven firemen reached the scene and confirmed that the boy was feared drowned.

He said that a surface search was conducted before a scuba team was sent to aid the operation, which also involved police, civil defence force and voluntary fire fighting squads.

Fire Supt Mohamad Mustakim said the boy's body had yet to be recovered.

It is still uncertain whether the mine is located near flooded areas in the Kuala Muda district.
