ALOR SETAR: PAS isn’t serious in changing the government if it targets contesting only 40 parliamentary seats in the upcoming polls, says Pokok Sena MP Datuk Mahfuz Omar (pic).
“To me, Pakatan Harapan is the only coalition that shows a commitment towards a change of power.
“PAS’ target of winning 40 parliamentary seats will not benefit the people and it indicates that a change of power is not possible at all,” said the long-time PAS man, referring to party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang’s remarks to Malay-daily Sinar Harian in an exclusive interview on Friday.
Mahfuz, who is known for attending the events of parties that are not in good terms with PAS, was speaking to reporters at the Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah)’s Second National Convention.
According to Mahfuz, he felt obliged to attend the event after he received an invitation from Amanah, adding that the two-year-old PAS splinter party is the only party that shows a commitment to ensure a change of political power in the country.
“That is why, Amanah must be given the Rakyat’s support.”
At the same time, Mahfuz revealed that three other prominent PAS members had decided to attend the event, namely Anak Bukit assemblymen Datuk Amiruddin Hamzah, Kubang Rotan assemblymen Mohd Nasir Mustafa, and Batu Burok assemblymen Dr Syed Azman.
“Also, many other regular PAS members have shown their attendance here. This is a sign of support,” he claimed.
Meanwhile, Mahfuz said that the reason why he hasn’t left PAS yet is because he wanted to send a message to its grassroots members that it is possible to support Pakatan Harapan without leaving the party.
“There are many PAS members that are afraid to leave the party. They are scared that their community might ostracise them.
At the same time, Mahfuz appeared unfazed over possibilities of a disciplinary action from the party over his attendance at Amanah’s event.
“In mature politics, I don’t think they will take action against me for attending today’s event.
“To me, national politics must be open, which means any politician can attend any political event and it shouldn’t translate to an offence.”
Mahfuz is believed to be estranged from his party colleagues, and often sides with Pakatan Harapan, which PAS has disassociated itself with.
He is also often seen with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia members led by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
