Malaysian man killed by stray bullet in southern Thailand

TAKBAI (Southern Thailand): A Malaysian man from Tumpat, Kelantan was shot dead by a stray bullet in Kampung Cek He here Sunday (Oct 15) night.

Police chief Kol Phacharapon Na Nakorn said Wan Mohd Zain Wan Hussain, 46, from Kampung Ketil died at the scene in the 9.30pm incident.

"The victim was riding a motorcycle at a security checkpoint when four men in a pickup truck opened fire at police.

"One of the bullets hit the victim," he said.

He said a bomb exploded near the area when other security staff arrived to assist their injured colleagues.

He said the victim's remains were sent to Takbai Hospital for post-mortem.

He said some confusion arose during the identification process when it was found that the victim was carrying the MyKad of his 15-year-old son.

An official said the victim could have entered Thailand illegally as no passport was found on him.

Thai security forces have warned of violence in Takbai in conjunction with the incident on Oct 24, 2004 where about 86 residents died while they were being transported in a military truck in Pattani.
