JOHOR BARU: Roadside hawkers operating by the road side in the state will get financial assistance from the state government to upgrade their stalls, beginning next year.
State Agriculture, Agro-based Industries, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperative committee chairman Ismail Mohamed said each of them would get between RM1,000 and RM5,000.
He said that the Entrepreneur Development Centre (EDC) has been tasked to undertake the programme expected to benefit some 800 to 1,000 roadside hawkers.
"The grant will be utilised to upgrade their temporary makeshift stalls with better display units for their foods or drinks, among other things," said Ismail.
He said this at a press conference after presenting grants to existing micro-entrepreneurs to expand their operations or production activities.
Ismail said the roadside hawker programme is only open to existing local hawkers and they must have a license to operate their business.
"If they don't have licenses, we will help them to get theirs from the local councils as we don't want to see illegal hawkers operating by the roadside," he said.
Ismail said the upgrading exercise would also help to improve the hygiene of the stalls, which would result in better income for the hawkers.
