SUNGAI PETANI: A woman had a scare when her stash of more than RM2,000 kept in a plastic bag was accidentally thrown away with the trash, but nine honest garbage collectors helped her find it.

The workers went through the massive pile of rubbish, bag by bag, at the waste disposal centre in Pulai until they found her savings.

Then they went to the home of Aminah Yahya, 60, in Kupang, near Baling, and gave back her RM2,379.80.

Urban services concessioner Environment Idaman (E-Idaman) Baling unit leader Shazwan Shahbudin said Aminah must have been keeping the money for a long time.

“All the notes in the plastic bag were faded and covered in mildew, so we think she has been saving for many years.

“We were told that Aminah likes to collect unwanted or discarded items and keep them in the porch of her house.

“Her son visiting from Kuala Lumpur called our company to request a cleanup, so we went and cleared all the trash, among which the bag of money was hidden.”

He added that the nine workers were formally praised by the company.
