Flood situation in Kedah improves

ALOR SETAR: The flood situation in Kota Kuala Muda, Kulim and Langkawi in Kedah has improved, but a heavy downpour was reported in Perlis at about 8am Saturday.

The downpour affected 15 villages near Padang Besar, Kangar and Arau.

In Kedah, state Disaster Management Committee's secretariat coordinator Capt (Civil Defence) Saifuddin Abdullah said that 351 villagers were evacuated to five flood relief centres in Langkawi and Bandar Baharu.

He added that two flood relief centres in the Kuala Musa district were closed at 8am.

In Bintong, Perlis, the state Disaster Management Committee's secretariat said in a statement that 25 houses were submerged by 0.1 to 0.5m of water due to the continuous downpour.

However, no flood relief centre was opened in Perlis as of 8.30am on Saturday.
