ALOR SETAR: Police are looking for a man who allegedly tried to steal from the donation box in a mosque located at the state police contingent headquarters here.

A source from one of the mosques in the district said the incident happened on Thursday when the Masjid Jamek Nurfadzilat's 32-year-old imam arrived there at about 6.15pm.

"When the imam went into the mosque, he heard a loud noise and saw a man trying to break the padlock on the donation box.

"The suspect rushed out and escaped on a motorcycle through the back gate of the state police contingent headquarters. The man left behind a bag containing various tools," he said, adding that CCTV caught the entire act on film.

"Three break-in cases had taken place in the mosque before the CCTV was installed," he said.

The source also said that one of the mosque's committee members managed to snap a picture of the suspect before he got away.

Kota Setar district deputy OCPD Supt Yazri Ismail said they had received a report over the incident.

"The case will be investigated under Section 451 of the Penal Code for house break-in without theft.

The alleged thief was caught on CCTV (right) and his photo taken as he fled.
