JOHOR BARU: Former national athlete Nordin Jadi was among the thousands who witnessed sprinter Khairul Hafiz Jantan win the gold medal in the 100m final at Stadium Bukit Jalil.

“I was seated just in front of the finish line because I wanted to see the scoreboard. It was tense and I was over the moon when Khariul Hafiz won the race,” said Nordin, who represented Malaysia in athletics in the SEA Games and also in two Summer Olympics.

The 55-year-old father of four said that night at Bukit Jalil reminded him of what it was like representing the country in an international sporting event.

Nordin Jadi said he is extremely proud over Malaysia achievement in this years SEA Games.

He said he understood what was going on in the minds of the Malaysian athletes participating in the SEA Games.

Nordin represented Malaysia in the 400m from 1981 before retiring due to tendon injuries some 10 years later.

He participated in three SEA Games editions in Bangkok (1985), Jakarta (1987) and Kuala Lumpur (1989).

He said when Kuala Lumpur hosted the SEA Games in 1989, there were high expectations from Malaysians due to it being the host nation.

“I managed to help Malaysia qualify for the 4x400m finals held at Stadium Merdeka, which is smaller than Bukit Jalil, but the crowd was about 20,000 and was very loud,’’ he recalled.
