GOING to the cinema has always been a favourite pastime for Malaysians – and not just to escape the scorching weather outside. As cinemas have transformed over the years to make movie-viewing an awesome experience, so has the landscape of Malaysian film. From comedies and folklore to dramas with poignant messages, today the local film industry is finally seeing profitable cash returns coming in. But just how did it all start?
One of the pioneers of Malaysian film was Tan Sri P. Ramlee, arguably the most influential local filmmaker of all time. P. Ramlee churned out hit after hit, from the Bujang Lapok series and Nujum Pak Belalang in the late 1950s to the Labu Dan Labi features and Tiga Abdul in the 60s.
