ALOR SETAR: Kedah Immigration Department personnel detained 21 illegal foreign workers here in a crackdown named "Operasi Mega" on Sunday.

"Operasi Mega, involving 15 officers, was carried out from 3pm to 7pm to hunt down illegal immigrants at seven targeted locations in Alor Setar," said its director Zuhair Jamaludin on Monday.

He said 55 people of various nationalities were screened.

"Twenty-one people, aged between 21 and 47, were detained for not having proper documents or valid working permits, overstaying and violating the terms of their passes," he said.

The locations targeted include two roadside fried chicken stalls, a hardware shop, two spas, a shoplot under construction and a rented house.

He said the detained foreigners would be placed in the Immigration lock-up at the Home Ministry building here for further investigation.

They will then be transferred to the Belantik Immigration detention depot in Sik.
