THE Government does not encourage underage marriage as it affects a child’s potential and growth.
The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry said in a statement that children should be given the time to develop their potential and that a marriage can affect that opportunity.
“An underage marriage can physically and mentally challenge a child and affect many other aspects such as the health and education of the child,” it said in response to the case of a 12-year-old girl in Sabah who married the man convicted of raping her. The man is now serving a 12-year jail sentence.
