Datuk Seri Dr. Wee Ka Siong deliver his speech at the 58th Institution of Engineers Malaysia annual dinner in Kuala Lumpur, yesterday.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Government will meet with employers and workers as soon as possible to find an amicable solution over the amendments to the Employment Insurance System Bill.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said the Government needed to address feedback from both employers and workers.

The Bill, which was tabled in Parliament on Tuesday, will see the creation of an insurance scheme for laid-off workers while increasing their chances of re-employment.

“We will not delay this meeting. It is a tripartite responsibility between the Government, employers and workers so that all three parties can come to an agreement on the Bill.

“We need proper consultations with all the stakeholders involved and for them to present us with their views,” he told a press conference after attending the Malaysia-China Teens Calligraphy Competition “Qi Gong” Cup 2017 yesterday.

Four ministers – Dr Wee, Datuk Seri Richard Riot (Human Resources), Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani (Second Finance) and Datuk Paul Low (Prime Minister’s Department) – have been tasked with meeting various organisations.

Dr Wee said it was still too early to know if there would be amendments to the Bill but gave his assurance that “all parties will be consulted”.

“The Government’s intention is to help workers, especially those who are retrenched without getting any benefits,” he said.

On a separate matter, Dr Wee, who is also MCA deputy president, refuted allegations that a party division leader was involved in collecting money in exchange for citizenship for a Chinese national.

As far as he is concerned, no MCA member is involved in such unscrupulous activities.

“But if we find anyone abusing his or her party position for personal gain, we will take stern action,” he said.
