KUALA LUMPUR: Full-sized bicycles are now allowed on board the Rapid KL LRT on days when the KL Car-Free Morning is held.
Rapid Rail, the operator of Rapid KL’s LRT, monorail and MRT services, has come in to support the hugely popular programme by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) on the first and third Sunday of every month.
Rapid Rail CEO Datuk Zohari Sulaiman reminded cyclists to follow the rules and regulations on the Sundays that full-sized bicycles were allowed to be carried on LRT trains.
“The most important thing is for them to exercise caution and discretion while bringing in their bicycles.
“We need to ensure the safety and comfort of other commuters as well. If the trains are packed, please refrain from forcing the bikes into the trains.
“The cyclists also need to enter the trains from specific doors at each station. For the Kelana Jaya Line, they can only board the four-car trains and not the two-car trains,” he said during the roll-out of the Bike & Ride programme at Bandaraya LRT Station here yesterday.
Among the guidelines for the programme are that each bicycle should be no more than 200cm long and 120cm high, clean and free from mud and grease, and not ridden inside the trains and stations at any time.
Cyclists should enter and exit through the wide-aisle gate and be extra cautious not to bump into other passengers when boarding or leaving.
Furthermore, the cyclists will be held responsible for any damage caused, with Rapid KL having the right to refuse entry to those with permitted bicycles if it could cause inconvenience to other passengers or affect train operations.
Besides supporting DBKL in promoting its “Go Green & Stay Healthy” aspirations, Zohari added that Rapid Rail’s Bike & Ride programme was also aimed at further wooing the cycling community.
He hoped that the programme would enhance first- and last-mile connectivity and contribute to efforts to increase public transport usage, which is targeted to be 40% by 2030.
On other days, Rapid KL’s LRT networks – Ampang Line, Sri Petaling Line and Kelana Jaya Line – allow only foldable bikes during off-peak hours.
Foldable bikes are also allowed on all days on the Rapid KL Monorail Line, the Bus Rapid Transit-Sunway Line and the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line outside of peak hours.
