3.7 million yet to sign up to vote, says PM

OVER three million Malaysians who are eligible to vote have not registered yet, says the Prime Minister.

In a written reply, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said that as of March 2017, a total of 3,772,149 people have yet to register.

“In addition to that, the Election Commission has received 1,454 objections (to voter registrations) from January to March 2017,” he said.

The Pekan MP was responding to questions by Batu Kawan MP Kasthuri Patto who asked for the number of unregistered voters according to their ethnicities.

She also asked on whether people with temporary ICs would qualify to vote.

Najib said any person possessing a temporary Malaysian identification card would have to stay out of voting.

“Temporary IC holders will not be eligible to register as voters and will not be able to vote during election or by-elections,” he said.
