Good turnout at Ride for Malaysia

SEPANG: Enthusiastic cyclists came with all makes of bicycles to participate in the Ride for Malaysia 2017 event here Sunday morning.

The event, held at Sunsuria City Celebration Centre, saw the arrival of public figures, guests and participants from as early as 6am.

And by the time the event was flagged off, over 2,000 people had gathered in their Ride for Malaysia t-shirts for the event organised by Star Media Group (Star) and property developer Sunsuria Berhad.

Deejays Brian and Cynthia rallied the spirited crowd to sing the Negaraku before the flagging off of the 30km ride by Star chairman Datuk Fu Ah Kiow, Sunsuria executive chairman Datuk Ter Leong Yap, Star group managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, and Sunsuria executive director and chief executive officer Koong Wai Seng.

The VIPs later joined in the 5.5km Family Ride along with many other parents who came with their young children.

“Ride for Malaysia is an invitation to our fellow Malaysians to play an active role in promoting unity and patriotism.

“It’s a declaration for all of us to stand in solidarity with our beloved nation – tanah tumpahnya darahku, as our national anthem goes – in good and bad times,” said Wong.

Ter said that apart from promoting national unity and patriotism, Ride for Malaysia "is a chance for families and the community from all walks of life to raise awareness for a healthier and more environmental-friendly lifestyle."

“Everyone is responsible for the wellbeing of our nation and we each have a role to play,” Ter said.

CIMB group chief executive officer and executive director Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, who took part in the 30km ride, said:

“Our 30km ride was good. The weather was not too hot and there was some rain towards the end. But it was fun."

“It was good to see people cycling for unity, cycling for Malaysia. We should do this not just as an annual event but every week,” he said.

The 5.5km Family Ride was flagged off by Star group chief editor Datuk Leanne Goh and Sunsuria general manager of marketing Mandy Phang.

Guests who took part in this 5.5km Family Ride included models Amber Chia and Kavita Kaur, singer DJ Dave, activist Anas Zubedy, scientist Dr Lyana Khairuddin, former Miss Malaysia Yvonne Lee and Chloe Chen, deejays Lin and Tyzo (from Suria FM) and deejay Jason and Anson (from 988 FM).

Apart from Zafrul, other VIPs who joined in the Sunday morning fun were Naza Corp Holdings group chief operating officer Datuk Samson Anand George, Berjaya Corp Bhd deputy general manager Danni Rais and Enfiniti Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Engku Emran Engku Zainal Abidin.
