KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 13,272 rape cases involving victims below 18 years old were reported between 2010 and May this year – equivalent to about 2,000 a year or five every day.

“There were also 1,796 incest cases, 1,152 unnatural sex cases and 6,014 molest cases,” Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim said.

To overcome the problem, she said parents should be forthcoming with their children about “the birds and the bees”.

Answering a question raised by Zuraida Kamaruddin (PKR-Ampang) in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday, Rohani said parents should not feel embarrassed to speak to their children about certain aspects of sex.

“Parents should not feel shy to talk to their children about rape, incest and unnatural sex as some children already know of such things.

“They should bring the matter up with their children rather than have them learn about it from others,” she said, adding that educating children on sexual crimes could help prevent them from becoming victims.

Rohani noted that Johor recorded the highest number of rape cases involving children below 18 with 2,089 cases while Sabah had the highest incest cases, totalling 263.

“Selangor had the highest number of unnatural sex and molest cases, totalling 235 and 1,052 cases, respectively,” she added.

Besides sexual crimes, Rohani said a total of 2,244 physical abuse cases involving children were also reported to the police between 2010 and May this year.

To a question by Datuk Dr Noraini Ahmad (BN-Parit Sulong), Rohani said that some 683 teachers have been trained to educate students on how to avoid becoming victims of sexual crimes.

She added that a special court for child sexual crimes would be set up nationwide following the first one in Putrajaya on June 22.

Rohani said states with a high number of sexual crimes against children would be given priority for the setting up of the special court.
