PUTRAJAYA: Contract-based doctors will not be required to take six core SPM subjects and only need to sit for the Bahasa Malaysia paper to gain appointment in the civil service.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic) said the matter had been clarified and medical students would only need to sit for and pass the Bahasa Malaysia paper.

Contract-based doctors are those doing housemanship as well as those on compulsory service.

He reiterated the requirement that civil service employees need a pass in Bahasa Malaysia at SPM level remains.

The Deputy Prime Minister said medical graduates with O-levels can sit for the paper in November and can be employed as housemen once they pass.
