Teens and senior citizens among more than 50 arrested for gambling in Sarawak

The cockfighting ring busted by police.

MIRI: Teenagers as young as 16 and senior citizens were among those arrested by Sarawak cops for illegal gambling and cockfighting throughout the state.

Sarawak Head of Criminal Investigation Department Senior Asst Comm Datuk Dev Kumar said at least 50 individuals were arrested in 20 successful raids carried out in nine districts last week.

"Our CID teams in Miri, Padawan, Sibu, Limbang, Sri Aman, Bintulu, Sarikei, Kanowit and Samarahan carried out surprise raids in our ongoing-war against vice.

"During the successful raids, we arrested gamblers aged between 16 and 63 who were involved in public gambling, illegal 4D gambling, cyber gambling and also cock-fighting.

"Our CID teams also raided coffee shops and other premises believed to be used for gambling purposes," he said.

SAC Dev said police also seized more than RM 10,000 in cash plus mobile phones, printers, betting slips and cyber-gambling machines.

Police in Miri also busted a cockfighting ring in Kpg Pujut Padang Kerbau.

All those arrested will be charged under the Common Gambling House Act 1953 and those detained for cockfighting will also face charges of animal cruelty, said SAC Dev.
