PETALING JAYA: The Pujut by-election which was previously set to take place on July 4 has officially been cancelled by the Election Commission (EC).
In a statement on Monday, EC chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Hashim Abdullah said that the commission had met to discuss the issue after the Kuching High Court on June 17 overruled the decision of the Sarawak State Assembly to sack Dr Ting Tiong Choon as the Pujut assemblyman.
"The decision by the state assembly is what caused the vacancy of the state seat. The court, however, had decided that Dr Ting will remain as the Pujut state assemblyman and that he should be reinstated.
"In line with the decision by the court, the EC has decided to cancel the by-election writ," he said.
He added that following the decision by the EC, all preparations for the by-election have been cancelled.
Mohd Hashim also said the notice of the cancellation will be put on display by the election manager at the Miri Suarah hall as well as his office.
The Sarawak State Assembly previously removed Dr Ting as an assemblyman on May 12 after questioning his alleged Australian citizenship.
