Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) operations deputy director for Sandakan Komander Maritim Mohd Khairul Anuar Abd Majid said the victim has been identified as Amiruddin Jakariah (pic).

Amiruddin had gone out with casting nets late on Monday and his family lodged a police report when he did not return home to the village in Beluran district on Tuesday.

Khairul said the MMEA sent a boat to assist in the search that began at about 12.45pm that day; firemen and villagers from Kampung Babago joined in.

He said another fisherman, who was returning home, spotted Amiruddin’s boat at the Sungai Sidi rivermouth at about 10pm on Monday.

But the fisherman assumed that Amiruddin was sleeping in it so he did not report the sighting.

When he realised that a search was on, he told the authorities about the location of the boat.

Amiruddin’s body was found in the area around the boat. The cause of death is not known.
