Glutinous rice smuggling bid foiled by border security

BUKIT KAYU HiTAM: A smuggling syndicate’s ploy to mislead the authorities by having two lorries filled with RM120,000 worth of glutinous rice travel at different times and along separate routes was foiled by the Kedah Border Security Agency.

Its Bukit Kayu Hitam area commander ASP Mohd Khairi Abdullah said the five-tonne lorries filled with 300 sacks of rice each were stopped in Jalan Kampung Langsat and Jalan Kodiang, Changlun, at 4pm and 4.20pm on Sunday.

“The first lorry was so overloaded that it slanted to one side. The smuggled rice and the drivers, aged 38 and 39, were handed over to the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry’s Regulatory Rice Division for further action.

“Our investigations showed that the second lorry was using a false number plate,” he said yesterday.

The glutinous rice weighed 30,000kg in total.

ASP Mohd Khairi said the drivers claimed that they were paid RM200 per trip, adding that the rice from Thailand was meant for local distribution.

“There is a high demand for glutinous rice especially for the coming Hari Raya.

“The case is being investigated under Section 20 of the Control of Padi and Rice Act 1994 (Act 522),” he said.
