PETALING JAYA: Local cheerleading fans went wild with enthusiasm during the CHEER 2017 roadshow and premiere of the cheerleading-themed movie Let’s Go, JETS! here at TGV 1 Utama.
The event was a teaser for the upcoming CHEER 2017 Finals in August, Malaysia’s premier national cheerleading competition.
Yesterday’s roadshow kicked off with a thrilling performance by professional cheerleaders from the Cheerleading Association and Register of Malaysia (CHARM), followed by the movie screening.
Let’s Go, JETS! is based on a real-life story of a group of small-town cheerleaders in Japan who beat the odds to compete in the United States.
“There are not many movies about cheerleading, and people still think cheerleading is not a sport.
“To have a movie that portrays the reality of how a cheerleader feels, it’s a real deal for us,” said Suria Jones, 16, a CHARM cheerleader who performed at the roadshow.
“The hardships that my teammates and I have gone through were portrayed in the movie.
“I feel very happy that it’s out there to remind people cheerleading is real and it’s challenging”, Jones added.
Many of the cheerleaders who will be competing at CHEER 2017 were at the event, and most of them are already in intensive training mode.
“It is the fasting month, and I have teammates who are Muslims who cannot eat nor drink, but that did not stop us from preparing for the upcoming competition.
“There are more challenges, but my teammates and I are working hard together to achieve what we want, which is to get into the top four in the High School All-Girls category,” Jones said.
XOX Mobile, the official partner for CHEER 2017, also had a booth at the event promoting its ONEMUSIC mobile starter pack.
Registration for the competition, open to all secondary school and college cheerleading teams nationwide, closes on July 21.
CHEER 2017 will be held at Tropicana City Mall on Aug 19 from 10am to 6pm. Admission is free.
