GEORGE TOWN: Penang police have taken the fight against illegal gambling activities a notch higher, said state top cop Comm Datuk Wira Chuah Ghee Lye.
He said that from the 211 raids conducted so far on online gaming centres and family entertainment outlets, they seized 1,234 simulator machines, slot machines and laptops amounting to millions of ringgit.
“We also arrested 315 people involved in the illegal activities this year,” he told a press conference after a rank promotion ceremony at the state police headquarters in Penang Road yesterday.
Comm Chuah said the criminal investigation department carried out two special operations this year on illegal gambling activities.
“Between May 25 and June 4, we conducted 40 successful raids and confiscated 79 simulator machines and 100 slot machines and RM8,448 in cash. We also arrested 68 people,” he said.
Comm Chuah said besides taking action against the operators under the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 and the Entertainment and Places of Entertainment Enactment 1998, they also charged eight operators under the Prevention of Crime Act 1959 (Poca) since 2014.
“Those under Poca will be either detained in Simpang Renggam, or placed under restricted residence.”
In 2016, Comm Chuah said they conducted 140 raids and seized 703 simulators, computers and slot machines.
“We also arrested 234 people last year,” he said.
