MIRI: The Barisan Nasional component party – Sarawak United Peoples Party (SUPP) – has shortlisted Miri mayor Adam Yii to be the candidate for the Pujut by-election.
A Barisan veteran said Yii has already been endorsed by the SUPP’s top central leadership as its number one choice for the seat.
“By virtue of his post as Miri city mayor and his position as Pujut SUPP chairman for the past five years, he is the ideal choice.
“He has also been actively working for the community as mayor and is already well known to the Miri people.
“We in SUPP feel he is the most winnable candidate for Barisan in this by-election,” said the party veteran yesterday.
Miri SUPP committee chairman Datuk Lee Kim Shin, party secretary-general Datuk Sebastian Ting, Yii and grassroots leaders have already activated their campaign preparations at the branches here.
Over the past few days, Yii has been seen in almost every Gawai Dayak open house and buka puasa gathering in Pujut.
The Pujut state seat fell vacant three weeks ago when its incumbent assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon from the DAP was booted out of the State Assembly over his Australian citizenship.
Dr Ting defeated Datuk Hii King Chiong of Barisan and two other candidates by a 1,800 majority in the last election in May.
The Election Commission has fixed June 20 for nomination and July 4 for polling in the Pujut seat that has more than 28,000 voters.
Yii, when asked on his candidacy for Pujut, declined to confirm but has left it to the SUPP central leaders and Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Openg to decide.
