GEORGE TOWN: A video clip of a Myanmar national being hacked with a cleaver by his countryman in Penang has gone viral on social media.

The 79-second clip is believed to have been taken by a woman staying across the street where the crime took place at about 11am yesterday,

In the clip taken in Jalan Westland, she can be heard screaming in an effort to stop the attack.

She also told a person next to her that a police report should be lodged before she again shouted at the attacker in Hokkien that “the police are here”.

A passer-by then hit the attacker with a stick to stop him. The attacker then sat down and cradled the victim’s head until the police arrived.

Their housemate, also a Myanmar national, said the attacker came to Penang five years ago while the victim, 27, had been here for three years.

“Both are friends and they work in a restaurant. I have no idea what triggered the attack.”

OCPD Asst Comm Anuar Omar said the victim, whose left ear was nearly severed, was sent to Penang Hospital in critical condition.

He was also injured on the neck, arms and legs.

“We arrested the 28-year-old suspect and recovered the cleaver used in the attack.

“We are trying to determine the motive but the suspect refused to cooperate with us.

“Several witnesses have been interviewed including the wo- man who took the video clip.”

ACP Anuar said the case was being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt.
