KUCHING: The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) has submitted a list of candidates for the Pujut by-election to the Barisan Nasional leadership for consideration.
SUPP president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said it was up to Chief Minister and state Barisan chairman Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg to decide on the choice of the winnable candidate.
Dr Sim declined to reveal the names in the list, but said there were new faces in the SUPP list.
The Pujut state seat fell vacant when its incumbent Dr Ting Tiong Choon of DAP was removed by the Sarawak legislative assembly on May 12 for having dual citizenship in Australia and Malaysia.
The Election Commission has set June 20 for nomination and July 4 for polling.
Dr Sim said Barisan would have to work hard to wrest Pujut back from the Opposition.
“It’s a very challenging seat because the last time, we lost by over 1,700 votes. The right candidate is critical for that seat.
“It is a seat which you have to work hard to convince the voters that you are the right candidate and the right person to represent the voters,” he added.
In the May 2016 state election, Dr Ting won Pujut with a 1,759-vote majority in a four-cornered fight against Barisan direct candidate Datuk Hii King Chiong, Jofri Jaraiee of PAS and former Pujut assemblyman Fong Pau Teck who stood as an independent after being sacked by DAP in 2013.
The State Reform Party Sarawak (STAR) may field Fong as its candidate.
STAR president Lina Soo said the party was waiting for Fong’s decision whether to accept the offer as its candidate.
