ALOR SETAR: The Kuala Kedah Border Control Agency has seized 290,600 sticks of contraband cigarettes of various types.

The cigarettes, believed to be for the local market, are worth RM169,086.

Its deputy commander Noor Mohamed Shaik Alauddin said they found 1,367 cigarette cartons (273,400 sticks) and another 110 cartons (17,200 sticks) in a car belonging to a suspect in his 30s during a raid at a house in Taman Merpati at about 3pm on Wednesday

“We believe the man, who stays in the house, obtained the cigarettes from the south of the peninsula before distributing them to retail shops in Alor Setar and Kuala Kedah.

“Most of the cigarettes are new brands that explain their low price to attract customers,” he told a news conference yesterday.

The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967. — Bernama
