Six plead not guilty to possessing kratom

KANGAR: Five Malaysian men and a Thai national pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here to charges of possessing 990kg of kratom (daun ketum).

Ramdan Yahaya, 25, Wan Moha­mad Firdaus Wan Zawawi, Muham­mad Hafiz Md Zain, 19, Mohd Hakim Yaacob, 29, and Nor Hasham Mohd Najib, 30, along with Thai man Teeraphong Rongphon were charged with possessing kratom without permission under Sections 8 to 12 of the Poison Act 1952.

They were charged under Section 30(3) of the Act, which carries a maximum fine of RM10,000 or a jail term not exceeding four years, or both, if convicted.

All six allegedly committed the crime at the back of a house at 697, Jalan Padang Besar, Kampung Melayu, Padang Besar, near here at 2am on April 9.

Judge Azman Abu Hassan allowed bail for all the accused at RM10,000 each in one surety and fixed July 12 for mention.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Farhan Alif Ahmad handled the case, while the six accused were unrepresented.
