The luggage belonging to the two Turkish students in front of the cordoned off area at Sultan Abdul Halim Airport in Alor Setar.

ALOR SETAR : Two Turkish students were arrested after one of them uttered the words "bomb in the bag" while checking in their luggage at the Sultan Abdul Halim airport here.

The students, a 23-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman, were supposed to fly to  Subang from Alor Setar on Tuesday night.

Kota Setar District police chief ACP Mohd Rozi Jidin said the 7.50pm incident took place when the duo arrived at the airport counter to have their luggage checked in for their 9pm flight.

"The luggage of the female student was above the 30kg allowed weight and the male student approached another passenger next to him and asked him to carry some of their luggage," he said.

When the passenger declined, the male student said in English something to the effect of there being bomb in his bag. The passenger then informed staff at the check-in counter to confirm what was being said.

"When asked, the male student repeated the words 'bomb in the bag' in broken English," ACP Mohd Rozi said.

The duo were detained for questioning and a bomb disposal unit was called in.

"The check-in area was cordoned off but police did not find a bomb in the bag. The students were released at about 1am on Wednesday," he said.
