PAS' slurs to be a hot topic at Penang PKR convention

ALOR SETAR: PAS may get a taste of its own medicine today when PKR leaders convene in Penang Sunday afternoon for its state party convention.

PKR leaders have grown increasingly upset over the belligerent tone coming from the PAS muktamar taking place in Alor Setar and their frustrations may boil over.

"Definitely our leaders will address the issue. We feel hurt. It's unbecoming of them to say all that about us. We want to fight Umno and BN, our enemy is not PAS," said Penang PKR information chief Dr Afif Bahardin.

Referring to PAS' intention to break off ties with PKR, Dr Afif said no single party can make it on its own and that a coalition is needed to win.

Dr Afif, who is also Seberang Jaya assemblyman, said that PAS leaders should be addressing issues like the economy and social problems instead of attacking a fellow Opposition party.

Leaders scheduled to speak at the convention include president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar and secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution.

Azmin, who is also Selangor Mentri Besar, and vice-president Rafizi Ramli have also been singled out for criticism by PAS.

PKR leaders have been caught in a bind by the break-up threat that will affect the party's prospects in the general election and undermine the stability of the Selangor government.

Saifuddin has since challenged PAS to stop beating around the bush and resign from all posts in the Selangor government.

He pointed out that it was illogical and unfair of PAS to cling on to posts after they cut off ties with Pakatan Harapan.

PKR chat groups have also poked fun of what is happening at the Islamist party's muktamar.

When a PKR member asked about the venue of the PKR convention, one of them had replied that it would definitely have air-conditioning, a snide reference to the power breakdown at the PAS Dewan Pemuda muktamar on Wednesday.

The PKR state conventions are taking place ahead of the party's national congress next month.
