KUALA LUMPUR: Seventeen-year-old Wana and her friends couldn’t believe their eyes when they were greeted by two popular Malaysian artistes at a surprise party.
Band Bunkface’s vocalist Shamsul Annuar and actress Elfira Loy were on hand to welcome the children from Yayasan Chow Kit (YCK) as they arrived at the KL Krash Pad youth centre in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman yesterday.
“I was shocked but excited,” said Wana. “This is the first time I’ve experienced something like this. I wish my family was here as well,” she said. “But at least I’ve got my YCK family.”
It all started with an episode of R.AGE’s latest documentary series, Children of Chow Kit.
In the second episode, Wana told a bittersweet tale of her favourite moment growing up in Chow Kit – a visit to KFC with her mother.
“Of all the mewah-mewah (luxurious) restaurants, KFC is the only one I have been to,” she said, adding that her mother could no longer afford to bring her there as her father was “missing”.
The video inspired KFC Malaysia to organise the surprise party for Wana and her friends at YCK, a non-governmental organisation for at-risk children in the Chow Kit area.
YCK chief operating officer Ananti Rajasingam said she shared the R.AGE video on KFC Malaysia’s Facebook page just to see their reaction to it.
“I wasn’t expecting anything,” she said. “But now, they said they will also support us long-term and connect us to potential partners,” said Ananti.
QSR Brands (M) Holdings Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Merrill Christopher Pereyra, representing KFC Malaysia, was also at the event to briefly share the story of how he himself overcame hardships in his younger days.
“It was a humbling experience to be here today because I realise how fortunate my life is,” said Pereyra who has grown up without a father since he was a year old.
“No matter how difficult things get, there are people who have had a tougher life than you.”
